Jedward: Irish Buzz Jedward, chosen to represent Ireland at Eurovision 2011, is a group with a difference. It’s made up of twin brothers John and Edward Grimes, who have earned a place on the British scene more by creating a buzz than through their talent.
Discovered in 2009 during the sixth series of the UK’s X-Factor, the two young Irishmen, then only 18, got people talking right away. Their teen look, angelic faces and quiffs could only win the public’s favour. Success wasn’t certain as at the time critics said John and Edward Grimes couldn’t sing, or at least not well enough to win the X-Factor. They nevertheless finished the contest in 6th place.
Their lack of vocal ability didn’t stop the public enjoying the performances of the UK’s new darlings. As soon as the show was over they rode a wave of popularity and recorded their first single, Under Pressure, under the name Jedward - a contraction of both their first names. The single was a hit on its release in July 2010, and broke all sales records in Ireland. Their first tour was extended after all tickets sold out in the first few days.
They didn’t stop there, and launched their own TV reality show, OMG Jedward, in which viewers saw them promoting their album Planet Jedward. After its broadcast on TV, the show was sold on DVD and once again Jedward broke all records for sale of a music DVD in Ireland.
The two youngsters behind the Jedward phenomenon have been fans of Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake and the Backstreet boys since childhood, and look set to follow their example. They were therefore a natural choice by the public to represent Ireland at Eurovision 2011 with their hit single Lipstick, which is already at number one. They have qualified for the semi-finals but still have to qualify for the grand final on May 14th in Dusseldorf. Jedward may be a recognised group in the UK, but are a long way from worldwide fame.
