Here's my painting. I'm going to give it to them. I used acrylics, gold leaf, glitter, beads. Ok, so I have given them this painting, in Stevenage. THEY LOVED IT!! they told me it was amazing (both at the same time, in synch!) and asked how long it took, what I used etc. They asked me to sign it, but I said I'd already got my initials on it. But they insisted I sign it - they wanted MY signature! Edward said I had to and I might be famous one day! Hah! John gave me a pen and I wrote on it "With love from Julie xxx" They loved the hair, with gold leaf, glitter etc. I said it represented them....golden, sparkling and pure joy What wonderful boys they are though! Apart from it being JOHN and EDWARD, it's a lovely feeling to get positive feedback about your artwork. I know the boys like art too, they liked doing it in school and I suspect they have some knowledge of art history. I did attempt to explain to them the significance of the colours, but John interrupted and chatted away I loved that I made them happy and could see their happiness, and feel it in their hugs They said they're going to frame it and hang it up. OMG! Happy much? YES!!!!!!!

I did attempt to explain to them the significance of the colours, but John interrupted and chatted away I loved that I made them happy and could see their happiness, and feel it in their hugs They said they're going to frame it and hang it up. OMG! Happy much? YES!!!!!!! What are the significance of the colours? Lapis lazuli, an expensive intense blue mineral that was used to make pigment, was always used historically in paintings to represent the most important person, a status symbol if you like. So in religious art, the Madonna is usually always in blue, for example. Also, any royalty were painted in blue with gold leaf on top to signify their importance, wealth and iconic status. My favourite colour is pthalo blue and I used this and a gorgeous deep turquoise greeny colour mixed together for the boys' hair...the nearest I could get to anything like Lapis lazuli. So I have purposefully done their hair....which is their trademark and is iconic, and what sets them apart from others, in this intense blue with the gold on top. It's a metaphor for how iconic they are to me and thousands of others, and their status in our hearts The glitter and beads add a lovely texture and signify their fun and joyfulness.their fabulousness, if you like I showed the painting to some people in the queue outside Stevenage, and I loved how they wanted to touch the hair to feel its texture......so the painting is almost a mirror of how we want to sense the tactile quality of John and Edward's hair in reality! BTW, I did let people touch it. I love feeling textures on paintings! When I do a painting I have in mind exactly what it will look like before I do it. As I paint, the nearer I get to this image in my mind, the better and more satisfying the painting is (to me, at least). As soon as it goes off, it never seems to work. However, this does not meant to say that this image in my mind's eye doesn't change as I go along, especially with more abstract pieces. I love colour too, I can't paint in monochromatic hues. I've tried and I can't do it! I just adore blues and oranges together. As orange is the opposite to blue on the chromatic scale, I used it for the background to get the highest contrast, so that the boys' portraits would stand out. See, I did want to tell them this, but I guess that was bit ambitious on my part ;D I did tell them in my letter though, that I sent with the painting, that the hair is glittery and golden to signify their preciousness and fun. And some other stuff, which I've forgotten

It's wonderful Leeloo. I know you were over the moon Saturday night by their reaction to it.
I'm fascinated too, by the background history of the colours, and your palette choice for this; and yes, their hair came out amazing.

It was perfect, giving them the painting and them having a look before I met them. Although it would also have been cool to be with them when they saw it for the first time. But their reactions were so genuine and I'm so happy that I made them happy. Everyone in work today wanted a copy of the pic! I'm converting them all into Jedheads! I really want to do another painting now!

Thank you guys! The thing is, I've been doing this sort of thing for a long time, although it's a while since I've done figurative stuff. I really want to do another one. I need to have a think about it.

I'm trying to draw a picture. No way will it be as good as Leeloos painting but I'm trying: I still need to: Finish Ear Detail Do hair detail Eyelash/Eyebrow Detail Shade Colour I think the lips maybe a bit too big and I'm unsure about Edward's eyes. I've asked Leeloos advice already so it should turn out as great as I can come up with. EDIT: I've just noticed Edward's ears are wonky too lol

I noticed this when painting him, and Jane has said it too. His face is much less symmetrical than John's. But remember Jade, it isn't all about getting an exact likeness - it's about capturing their essence, or 'soul' if you like, and should ideally be an expression of your perception and experience of that essence.

I'm thinking about colouring it in like a cartoon now. I'll scan the drawing and try a cartoon one with the scan and see how that works. I reckon it looks like a cartoon already

I've coloured it in. I need to do the face colour and shading now. I decided to go for a cartoony feel - it's just so much easier for me Attachments:
